The following results from the Google survey show that mobile users are less than forgiving towards sites that are not mobile friendly. 

67% of users said they’re more likely to purchase a product or service from mobile-friendly websites.
61% say that if they do not see what they are looking for right away, they will go to another site.
74% of users said they would be more likely to return to a site when it’s mobile friendly.
52% of users said that a bad mobile experience made them less likely to deal with a company

To Google, Responsive Design Matters

On April 21, 2015 Google is updating their algorithm to measure websites’ mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal.  Will your website pass the test? 
To ensure your site is still appearing in Google’s mobile search results after April 21st, run your site through the mobile-friendly testing tool. If your site passes, you are OK.
If your site doesn’t pass, then the tool will recommend improvements you need to make. You can use your Webmaster Tools account to get a full list of mobile usability issues across your site using the Mobile Usability Report.
Google also announced that it will use information from indexed apps as a factor in ranking for signed-in users who have the app installed. As a result, you may start to see content from indexed apps featured more prominently in search results.
Google’s is adding a "mobile-friendly" label in its search results next to sites that pass this criteria, and It is likely that mobile searchers are going to visit a page labeled "mobile-friendly" before visiting a page without that label.
